The inaugural Continental Classic ran for six weeks between the first match on AEW Dynamite on November 22, 2023 and culminated at the World’s End PPV on December 30, 2023. At World’s End, Eddie Kingston defeated Jon Moxley to win the first Continental Classic and become the first American Triple Crown Champion. Throughout the tournament, Kingston retained the ROH World Title and NJPW Strong Openweight Title, and he became the first holder of the AEW Continental Title. Kingston defended all three titles in a victory over Bryan Danielson at Revolution on March 3, 2023. However, he lost the AEW Continental Title to Kazuchika Okada on the March 20, 2024 episode of AEW Dynamite and the ROH World Title to Mark Briscoe on April 5, 2024 at ROH Supercard of Honor, thus breaking up the American Triple Crown Championship.
In March 2024, Khan spoke on the status of the AEW Continental Championship, noting that its champion will defend in the next Continental Classic. Title defenses will continue under the tournament’s established rules with no outside interference and nobody allowed at ringside.
